Oxytocin (Oxt) is a mammalian neurohypophysial hormone produced by the hypothalamus that is released from the posterior pituitary into the systemic circulation. Oxt plays an important role in human and non-human social behaviors such as social recognition, attachment, anxiety and aggression. Oxt facilitates reproduction in all vertebrates at several levels and can be used to induce labor. Studies have shown that oxt may play a role in autism and other forms of normal developmental memory.
